Emily’s Story

Emily was in her freshman year in College (Southern Illinois University) when she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Throughout Emily’s (also known as Em by nurses and doctors) journey, she approached each day with a smile. She looked for ways for the medical community to learn from her disease so others could be helped as well.  Em lived out her faith even during the toughest days of treatment as she strived to make the most of each day.

One of Emily’s favorite bible verses comes from Ecclesiastes 3 verses 1-8:

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

Once Emily was diagnosed in May 2016, life took on a different look, but Em did not take life for granted. The goal of the Emily Settle Fund is to support Indiana cancer patients (ages 20 – 39) and their families with financial assistance to meet their travel and day to day needs. There is no better time than now to join us in the support of cancer patients on their journey as they take one step at a time and EMbrace Life.
